7 Fuel Efficient Driving Tips For Amateur Drivers
The condition of your car and the way you drive around may have a massive impact on the amount of fuel you use. Below are a few tips that you can use to save fuel and money at the same time.
1. Drive with optimal tyre pressure
Driving with ideal tyre pressure can make a massive difference to your vehicle’s fuel efficiency.
Reduced tyre pressure symbolises an increase in contact between the tyre and the road. As a result, friction increases, resulting in higher fuel consumption.
2. Drive using the right gear
Driving your car in a gear lower than what you need results in unnecessary fuel usage.
Change your gears as soon as your car becomes comfortable with a higher gear but without accelerating harder than what is necessary.
3. Accelerate smoothly
Be a smooth operator as much as possible. Treat the brake and the accelerator with respect.
Sudden breaks and acceleration might be fun on the road, but they can harm your fuel efficiency badly. So, use them wisely.
4. Try to keep your windows closed
A car’s fuel efficiency has a lot to do with its aerodynamics. Open windows, at high speeds, can result in poor fuel efficiency because of increased drag.
So, contrary to the popular belief, we reckon you would save more fuel by keeping your windows up and your AC on rather than doing just the opposite.
5. An idle car is a devil’s workshop
An idle car engine burns fuel without going anywhere.
So, if you have your car engine running while you are waiting for someone, you are getting nothing but zero kmpl at that time.
Simple solution; turn the engine off. Or if can stretch your budget, go for a car with an auto start-stop technology.
6. Avoid speeding
Over 90km/h, fuel consumption increases significantly. At 110 km/h, your car uses around 25% more fuel than what it should while cruising around at 90 km/h.
If your car comes with a cruise control, use it while driving on the highway. That will save you more fuel.
7. Minimize drag as much as possible
Additional parts on the vehicle’s exterior such as spoilers, roof racks, number plates, etc. increase fuel consumption and air resistance.
Your goal should be to minimize drag as much as possible. Take off roof racks when not in use. And if you are constrained to use them on a hiking trip, go for a streamlined roof box if possible.
