The Future of your Service Department

Image
There is nothing more frustrating to a customer than being told a repair will take X amount of time - only to be informed later that it will take longer. To those who work in busy dealership service departments, this happens frequently. Customers come in for one thing and, during the multi-point inspection, additional issues are found. Or, as can sometimes be the case, a technician cannot quickly diagnose an issue.   How often have you had a customer arrive in the service drive saying something is wrong, but the technician cannot replicate it? It happens all the time. And it’s frustrating for both the customer and the dealership.     OEMS have adopted technology in today’s vehicles at an incredible rate. And, most technicians simply don’t have the training to repair some of the problems that arise from this new technology. Most technicians weren’t trained to be electrical engineers or to approach vehicles more as computers than as purely mechanical machines. While technicians are a

How to Best Present the Benefits of a Career in Automotive Retail Sales!

Recruiting and hiring quality personnel for vehicle sales has never been easy, but according to most dealers I talk with, it’s never been as difficult as it is today. Even most of those in the job market with an interest in a “sales” career state that they want to stay away from selling cars! Although the automotive sales profession has pretty much overcome the stereotyping of the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s, it is still plagued with negative perceptions, the most predominant of which relate to hours required and compensation structure (the mix between salary and commission). Although a number of dealership organizations have prevailed over these negatives, most are still struggling with how to effectively communicate the unparalleled benefits of a career in automotive sales (and possibly a subsequent one in sales management). One of my clients asked for my help in developing a visual tool that she and her management team could use to better present the most significant benefits of an aut

Think Efficiency isn’t the Answer? Check out this Story!

According to a recent article in Automotive News , Motorcars Honda in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, believes that the future of franchise dealership profitability lies in efficient vehicle service, and as a result it’s service department is bustling.   So, what did they do? The dealership created an assembly line for quick-service that not only allows it to perform MPIs, but also an oil change in under 30-minutes. Every time. In fact, the dealership can service 71 vehicles in just two hours!   And they’ve put their money where their mouth is to the tune of $700,000. That may sound like a lot, but they forecast express servicing 30,000 cars per year. And, the innovative and efficient assembly line has the capacity to service 60,000. Not bad considering they aren’t limiting services to Honda customers, but to any vehicle owner.   The dealership feels the key elements to its service department’s success are speed, transparency and price. That’s what consumers want in today’s world.   B

Service Conquest: Success is in the Data

Image
As new vehicle sales profits become more difficult, it is important to increasingly turn your attention to growing your service business.  Dealers are rightly interested in finding new service customers to replace lost customers. However, service conquest is very difficult because you must overcome three challenges: reaching current driver, determining service need, and unhooking customer from a current service relationship. While there are many potential databases and approaches to locate service conquest prospects, each has limitations that need to be explored to prioritize their use and extract the most potential, as follows: Unaddressed Units in Operation . Review your current marketing program business rules to assure all known UIOs are being addressed. The customers most often overlooked include older or non-CPO used vehicles; appraised vehicles not won on trade; same brand sold used vehicles sold within the group; fleet sales; and retail parts customers. For most of these cu

Quick Tips on Working Alongside A Mechanic

Image
Every house has a builder and every plan has a designer. When we think of equipment’s and tools, the same pattern is true, every invented object has a definite plan and design. Equipment is often combined with a user manual or tech spec book. The idea behind providing such a book is that it can enable the user to learn about the products basis design and help him fix smaller problems and conduct basic maintenance too. While this approach works for small dollar value goods, it may be different for expensive equipment. The design and planning are complex and so is the repair and maintenance of such goods. Hence, product manufacturers prefer to train their employees or hire professional mechanic to handle labour intensive repairs and maintenance. A mechanic is mostly skilled on specific products and is trained and certified accordingly. For example, a mechanic who works on equipment that are manufactured for household will not be able to handle issues with equipment made for heavy indu

6 Services Your Fuel Suppliers Should Provide

Image
Engines come in different sizes and types, as do the fuels that provide the energy that keep them running. As machinery has evolved over the past few decades and technology has expanded what is available to us, superior performance is expected in a range of sometimes harsh circumstances, such as extreme weather conditions. Development of new products requires rigorous testing, which may require fuel of different types to replicate what is available around the world. In addition, there are concerns about emissions, the environment and sustainability which have taken on greater significance, all contributing to the many reasons why fuel design - matching and developing specific fuels for specific purposes - is a growing business and what your fuel supplier should be offering. A fuel recipe to suit every market Whilst a vehicle or piece of equipment may be marketed around the world, the fuel available in some countries may not be the same as what was used during the design of the engine

Banged up Bumper? 4 Tips to Save Cash on Car Repairs

Image
Car repairs come in all shapes and sizes, but they don’t have to drain your bank account. If you need to get your car fixed but are worried about the costs, here are four surefire ways you can save some serious cash and stress. Compare Estimates If you were in an accident and are looking to get repairs, you may have to go through a shop chosen by your insurer. If you’re on your own, then take the time to get at least three quotes from local mechanics. You’d be surprised at how greatly the costs can vary among competitors, and some may even price-match other offers. Call around and don’t be afraid to name-drop. Sometimes, just hearing that you’re considering another local competitor might score you a good deal. Research the Average Cost Online First This tip parallels with comparing estimates; hit up Google before you ask a mechanic for their fee. Sometimes, just knowing how much a repair costs on average can spare you from getting ripped off. You do have to take labor and your pe

Fixing up Your Classic? How to Make Sure Your Car Runs Better Than Ever

Image
Restoring a classic car is a fun project for anyone who enjoys automotive work. Not only does it give you the chance to bring a great car back to life, but it also affords you an opportunity to make that car better than it ever was before by making improvements to the factory design. Here are four great ways to make your car run better than ever while you’re working on its restoration.   Improve Engine Cooling with a Better Radiator and Hoses One of the most important factors in how well your car’s engine runs is how well it is cooled. Though stock cooling systems do well enough, they can be upgraded to provide more efficient heat transfer. A high-efficiency aluminum radiator with braided stainless steel hoses can greatly increase your car’s ability to dissipate heat from the engine. This, in turn, will prevent your engine from maintaining excess heat when it is pushed into higher horsepower ranges.   Supercharge or Turbocharge Your Engine If raw horsepower is what you want out

Is Digital Retailing Really a Good Thing for Dealers?

Image
The buzz today among vendors in the automotive industry is all about making the car buying transaction faster and more convenient for the consumer. I get it. Consumers think it takes too long to buy a car, so technology companies are inventing ways to trim down that transaction time. Sure, it may make car buying an easier and more convenient experience for consumers which, the hope is, will make consumers buy more cars. But, while that might be true, what are the side effects?   Now, if you want to talk about the power of convenience, look at Amazon. Speed and convenience are after all, the keys to their success. If Amazon had its way, it would simply teleport whatever a customer wants to them instantly. They can’t (and they don’t) but they’re very good at getting things to customers quickly – sometimes within hours.   However, when it comes to automobile purchases the real prize dealerships should be trying to win isn’t a quick “sale,” but rather a customer for life. If you take t

The need for a professional auto lead provider to boost sales

Image
Authentic, verified leads often translate into sales. In a way, a dealerships sale is directly related to the leads it gets. The better the quality of the leads the better is the sales. Hence the need to buy or subscribe to quality auto leads, which can be generated only by a professional auto lead provider of repute. This need to boost the sales has led to an increasing dependency of auto dealers on companies that provide quality auto leads, in a consistent manner for a specified duration as per the contract that they sign. The key benefits of getting into an association with a professional auto lead provider are:    Your dealership gets access to the maximum number of exclusive auto leads. Once you sign the deal with the auto lead provider, it becomes his responsibility to provide you with verified auto leads for both used and new cars. They often provide subprime leads too, which can definitely help the dealership boost its sales. You get verified leads: Reputable lead provider

Five Tips for Spring Car Maintenance

Image
The harshness of winter varies from region to region; comfortable climate near the south and west to near negative temperatures near the north and east. However, these different climates have somewhat of a routine effect on vehicles. By spring, there’s a laundry list of things that require attention. It’s important to invest in the car’s well-being to keep it running smoothly for a while. This is especially true for those planning on taking a road trip and accruing a large number of miles. Below are a few tips to get your automobile ready for another year of general use or travel: Take a Look at Your Car’s Liquid levels. One of the first things to consider around spring is changing the oil. Old oil has the ability to damage the engine and leads to substandard performance. This even creates the need for more fuel fill-ups. Additionally, check if any of these liquids need flushing or replacing: brake, power steering, transmission, and windshield washing fluids. While examining, kee

Don’t text and drive in 2018 – or ever!

Image
As a leading texting solutions provider in the automotive industry, it has become a responsibility of AdvantageTec to further amplify all the cries for help in preventing texting and mobile phone usage while driving.   A majority of adults believe they can text and drive but the data proves them wrong. This problem reminds me of a statistic from many years ago – 80% of drivers believe they are the best 20% of drivers on the road. Clearly, this is not possible just as it is not possible to text and drive. On the more humorous side of a serious article, it took German car manufacturers decades to put cup holders into their vehicles as they believed driving should not be mixed with drinking sodas or coffee (which is probably true on the autobahn). One thing we all know is texting and driving do not mix so let’s all put those phones down and drive responsibly. Here is why. The painful statistics (latest data in 2018 is from 2015) National Safety Council reports 1,600,000 accidents per

How To Choose a Good Taxi Service

Image
Booking a taxi for your destination can be a tiresome work if you are doing it for the first time. Taxi services are preferred by millions in terms of personal transportation. Furthermore, with the advent of the app-based taxi-hailing businesses, commuters continue to experience ease-of-use, convenience, and simplicity. Few tips in mind can always ease this task. Safety being the first priority, it is always advisable to go for a reputed firm which provides authorized and licensed drivers. The price comparison is quintessential before booking taxis as sometimes huge discounts are available for the same ride. Read customer reviews, ratings and ask your friends and family if you want. An easy ‘online booking system’ is a must so that you can book a ride at any time of the day. The fleet of vehicles provided should be clean, safe and comfortable and must have a GPS system to keep track of the vehicles and also helps in the time of emergencies. Don’t blindly go for any taxi service you fi

5 Habits that will transform your small business into a highly successful one

Image
If you have been to a wholesale market, you must have noticed that 4-5 out of hundreds of shop draw maximum number of customers, while the rest are doing just average. Why do some people excel, while others, despite selling the same product fare poorly? I have done extensive research, and came up with 5 habits that are essential to have if one wants to turn a mediocre business into a highly successful one. #1- If you are starting a business, have a clear picture of where you want to be at the end of a certain time period. Divide your goal into smaller, achievable parts, and work relentlessly to complete each part in time. If you have a clear vision of your business, make a plan to achieve it. Your belief in your vision will inspire your team to work hard to realize that goal. #2- Put your vision on paper that is you must have a practical model of procedures to be followed. They must be clear to everyone in your team, and e

How To Keep Your Car Clean During The Winters

Image
You might think that keeping your car clean through the winters may not be worth all the troubles as you are simply going to pick up more dirt and damage over time. However, you must also realize that leaving the wet, salty residue of slush on your vehicle can corrode its paint and bodywork. So, if you want to keep your car’s resale value intact, you should strive to keep it as damage free as possible. The below tips can help. 1. Use preventative waxing One of the primary areas where your car needs protection from road salt is the paintwork. To make sure your car doesn’t suffer any real damage in the long term, it’s best to use a polymer sealant or a quality wax as a means of protection against the corrosive nature of the salt. A good waxing should last around 3 months at most. Hence, it is advisable to execute this process in late autumn because it’s easier to do in warmer conditions than the bitterly cold months of the winter. 2. Use rubber mats inside your vehicle When the w
