4 Common Repairs that BMWs and Audis May Require

BMW and Audi are both known for making high-quality cars, but that doesn’t mean they’re perfect. Every car make seems to have some sort of kryptonite, and these two manufacturers are no different. If you own one of these cars, there are four possible repairs that won’t surprise your mechanic at all.

Electrical Issues

Audis and BMWs both experience frequent electrical system glitches. In BMWs, the most common electrical fault is an inability to control the power windows. Audi problems focus more on brake light and turn signal issues. If you’re faced with these issues, solving the problem is fairly affordable. Car repairs aren’t always so cut and dry, however. Things can get costly if your mechanic has to try and track down faulty wiring.

Oil Leaks

While the Audi A4 is perhaps the worst oil leak culprit, both car makers have issues with oil. Audis typically leak oil from multiple places, so always have your mechanic check the camshaft seals, valve cover gaskets and crankshaft seals when you have the car in for service. BMWs also leak, but usually at the oil filter gasket. Leaky cars not only stain driveways and garage floors but may need expensive repairs. You don’t want to deal with a damaged or seized engine, so keep an eye on your gaskets and seals.

Coolant System Failure

This one’s all you, BMW. While the coolant system on any car can fail, BMW has a bit of a reputation for coolant system failures. The good news is that the failure is predictable, generally occurring between 80,000 and 120,000 miles. Make sure you have your system checked when you start getting close to the danger zone. If you don’t, you may end up on the side of the road waiting for the tow truck.

Exhaust Leaks

Audi, too, has some unique problems and exhaust leaks are one of them. While not all Audis are affected equally, it’s common for an Audi exhaust to leak. Signs of an exhaust leak include a noisy engine, decreased fuel efficiency and a gas smell. You may also notice vibrations in the gas pedal. To prevent costly repairs, pay attention to your fuel economy and the sound of your engine. Always take your check engine light seriously, as well. The sooner you catch the leak, the fewer exhaust parts you’re likely to need.

When choosing your next car, remember that common problem aren’t guaranteed problems. It’s smart to know what you might be up against, but not every car will experience these failures.
