Considerations When Moving To A New Province
Moving to a new house in the same city can be stressful enough, so it wouldn’t be unfair for you to be overwhelmed by your upcoming move to a new province – but don’t worry, with enough research, planning, and preparations, your move can be seamless and stress free, giving you plenty of free time to enjoy what your new home has to offer.
The best way to transition into life in a new province is to know and understand what to expect when you get there – the fewer surprises and last minute decisions the better.
To help you with your move, we’ve put together a list of things you will need to take into consideration when moving to a new province.
Consider This
Driver’s License and Vehicle Registration
Your driver’s license and vehicle registration are issued by the provincial government, so it makes sense that when you move to a new province you are required to exchange your license and registration from your old province with updated one’s from the new province.
Insurance Policies
You will have to look into changing your life insurance, home insurance, and vehicle insurance when you move to a new province, as insurance rates vary between provinces.
This is largely due to the variance between publicly and privately run insurance coverage. Certain provinces, such as Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and BC offer only provincially run coverage, while all other provinces offer the option to go through privately run insurance companies.
Healthcare
Your healthcare plan is yet another aspect that is handled by the provincial government. When moving to a new province, you will have to enroll in that provinces healthcare system and cancel your enrollment in your previous plan.
Changing healthcare plans is not something that can be done before moving, or even immediately after, as typically you need to reside in a province for a certain number of months before being eligible for their healthcare policies.
Housing and Cost of Living
The housing markets and general cost of living can vary greatly from city to city and province to province. Make sure you do your research and know what to expect from the city you will be moving to.
Multiple factors can influence the cost of living in your new province, such as pay wages, provincial taxes, gas and grocery prices, etc.
Climate
Canada is a massive country, and as much as we like to joke that it’s just a giant sheet of ice, the climate actually varies quite drastically from region to region. Prepare yourself by knowing what type of climate to expect and packing accordingly – this can dictate what type of clothing, footwear, and household items you might need to take with you, leave behind, or even buy.
Knowing what type of weather to expect is also important for safety, as you may need to prepare your vehicle for the upcoming climate (Ie: installing winter tires).
You’re Off To A Good Start
By researching, understanding, and preparing for the above situations and changes you will need to make, you are on the right path to ensuring your move to another province goes smoothly.
