How to Safely Transport Your Second Car When Moving

Moving is an incredibly stressful time and you want to make sure your possessions will all arrive at your new place without issue. One of the more difficult things to transport, however, are any extra vehicles you may need to move. Here are some suggestions for how to transport a second car safely to your destination during a move.

Drive the Car Separately

Perhaps the simplest way to transport a second car when moving is to drive it yourself. This option will save you money and you will be able to drive and care for the car how you want. However, this option has its downsides. It will be time-consuming and you may not have the energy to do it. It will also put miles on a new or rarer car, which is certainly problematic if you are hoping to sell or trade it in at some point.

Use a Car Trailer

You can easily take the second car with you by loading it on a car trailer and pulling it behind another of your vehicles. You will have to decide between different types of car trailers. A car carrier (which fully carries the car) or a tow dolly (which only lifts the front wheels off the road). If you opt to haul the car yourself, follow all safety recommendations and ensure the trailer is solidly hooked up to the vehicle you are using to tow it.

Ship the Car

It is possible to ship cars using a professional automobile transportation service. This is usually done either on or in a semi-trailer. This is a great option if you can’t drive the car long distances or want to avoid putting miles and wear and tear on the car. Professionals can also offer insurance that the car will get to its destination safely or it will be paid for.

Ask Someone Else to Drive It

If you have a friend, spouse, child or someone else you know who might be interested in making some money, you can ask them to drive the car to its new destination. This option is usually considerably cheaper than having the car professionally shipped. Make sure any other drivers will be fully covered by your car insurance if you choose this option.

If you need to transport more than one car while moving, you fortunately have options. All of these options, however, have pros and cons, so carefully consider all of your choices before you make a decision. Once you’ve decided on the best course of action, you can get loaded up and go.
